2015 University Medallion

Gerald Boyles, Distinguished Professor EmeritusGerald V. Boyles is a distinguished professor emeritus in CCU’s E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration. He served on the Wall College faculty from 1973 until his retirement in 2007. He was the first dean of the Wall College and was named CCU’s Outstanding Teacher of the Year in 1986.

In 2000 Boyles was awarded the William J. Baxley Jr. Applied Business Professorship, which he held until his retirement. Named in honor of the late William J. Baxley Jr., dean emeritus of the Wall College of Business, the professorship was established in 1999 through a gift by Coastal alumnus Larry Coats Jr. and his wife Suzanne Byrd Coats. It was the first professorship established in the Wall College of Business and Boyles was the first to hold the professorship. In addition, the Gerald Boyles Student Investment Fund was created to honor his teaching legacy, both as a professor and a mentor.

He was instrumental in the Wall College’s accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and in the creation of the Wall College of Business building on campus. During his career, Boyles published numerous research articles, mostly about business finance and investments, and presented many papers at professional meetings.

Prior to coming to Coastal, Boyles was a finance instructor at the University of South Carolina and an assistant professor of finance at Old Dominion University.

He earned a bachelor's degree from Wake Forest University, an MBA and Ph.D., both in finance, from the University of South Carolina. He is also a chartered financial analyst.
