DID YOU KNOW?

History majors have the highest early career and mid-career salaries of the humanities and exceed many STEM majors.

Where History Can Take You

History majors work in diverse careers: teaching, academic advising, and student affairs; museums, government, and other related fields; law, politics, journalism, public policy, business, and technology. History majors often become leaders in their careers.

“Like many students, I originally went to Coastal for Marine Science. However, the history faculty ignited a spark in me I never knew I had. Since graduating, my history career has taken me from maritime museums to the Smithsonian, to my current role where I manage a historic house and design museum. I enjoy sharing my passion for history with others and engaging the public in meaningful ways. My time at CCU encouraged me to keep learning, growing, and asking questions about the world around me. It launched a career I never knew was possible, and one that I truly love!"

- Amanda Ferrario, B.A. History 2011
M.A. in Historic Preservation from Savannah College
Manager, Octagon Museum

“History at CCU prepared me for a career in the practice of law. History taught me how to conduct research efficiently, think critically, and to express myself in a manner that is clear and persuasive. From the moment I set foot in law school, I was grateful to have the skills that I developed studying history at Coastal."

- James Lawler, B.A. History 2019

Dr. Philip Whalen

Examine how European nationalism, militarism, and expansionism triggered a transregional conflict that unsettled existing geopolitical security, increased the interdependence between the fighting, home, and industrial fronts, redefined how patriotism reverberated across different populations, transformed state-society relations, and triggered the process of decolonization.

HIST 363: BLACK ATLANTIC / AFRICAN DIASPORA

Dr. Maggi Morehouse

We investigate the meanings of the Black Atlantic and the African Diaspora by studying the migrations and cultural unity of black people throughout the Atlantic. Students analyze first-hand accounts of people who experienced enslavement and emancipation, into present-day legal and political policies. We study the unique cultures and histories of African Americans, Caribbeans, Black Brits, Afropeans, Gullahs, and more.

Research Centers

The Joyner Institute for Gullah and African Diaspora Studies is the only interdisciplinary institute dedicated to a critical understanding of the experiences of Gullah Geechee people and other descendants within the global African diaspora.
