Chants for Recovery (CFR) is a Collegiate Recovery Program (CRP) at Coastal Carolina University. We provide a welcoming and inclusive environment for students in or seeking recovery from substance use disorders. We also promote a nurturing campus and healthy community where students in recovery can achieve academic, professional, and personal success. Our mission is to create a supportive community where students in recovery can thrive by:

  • Fostering peer support and accountability
  • Normalizing the recovery identity on campus
  • Providing information, resources, referrals, and advocacy
  • Providing substance-free social activities on and off campus
  • Providing a dedicated safe space

CFR is not a clinical treatment program; it is a recovery program based on social support models and theory. Participants voluntarily agree to respect the confidentiality of others and commit to creating a safe space that is rooted in the principles of recovery.

What is Recovery?

Recovery is the process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential. (Embrace Recovery SC)

Words matter when it comes to the language of recovery, additional support can be given by eliminating words and phrases that can have a negative bias against individuals. Avoid words like addict, habit, junkie, and clean. They suggest a person “is” the problem, rather than the person “having” a disease. Being characterized like that can reduce the willingness to seek treatment and we should all work toward ending the stigma associated with substance use disorders and recovery.
