American Red Cross Certifications
Lifeguard Training
The American Red Cross Lifeguard Course will train participants in all the skills and techniques necessary to become a professional lifeguard over the course of a weekend. This course is intended for those who seek a certification for the first time or for those who renewing their certification. There will be videos, demonstrations, as well as hands on experience. The class covers equipment based on rescues, spinal injury management and post-rescue care. Participants will also learn how to interact with the public.
Class Offerings for Spring 2024:
February 23rd, 24th, 25th
April 5th, 6th, and 7th
Typical Weekend Class Schedule:
Friday: 5-8pm
Saturday: 8am-5pm
Sunday: 8am-5pm
The first day of class, all lifeguard candidate will swim 300 years, treat water for 2 minutes without the use of hands, and complete a 10-pount brick retrieval test. These must be successfully completed to remain in the course. A lunch break will be given on Saturday and Sunday classes.
The class is limited to 12 participants per session. If there is low enrollment in any program, we reserve the right to cancel the course. If this takes place, you will be able to transfer into another course or receive a refund. Register in advance to reserve your spot! Water Safety Instructor Certification
The Water Safety Instructor certification course will train instructor candidates to teach water safety, including the Basic Water Rescue and Personal Water Safety courses, six levels of Learn-to-Swim, three levels of Preschool Aquatics and two levels of Parent and Child Aquatics.
Prerequisites: Must be at least 16 years of age on or before the final scheduled session of the course. Must be able to swim at a level 4 ability for the following skills: front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke and side stroke for 25 yards, butterfly for 15 yards, maintain position on back for one minute in deep water (floating or sculling), and tread water for one minute.

Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) Certification
The Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) certification is meant to train instructor candidates to teach Lifeguard Training including First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Lifeguard Management, AED Essentials, Oxygen Administration for the Professional Rescuer, Preventing Disease Transmission, Community Water Safety and Basic Water Rescue. The training prepares instructor candidates by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials and methods, how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants' progress.
Prerequisites
- Be at least 17 years of age by the last scheduled session of the instructor course.
- Be currently certified as a lifeguard in good standing with the American Red Cross
- Pass each section of the pre-course written exam with a score of 80 percent.
- Demonstrate competency in the skills evaluation.
